Arti Grabowski

Arti Grabowski – Dreamliner
September 16th, Saturday / 20:50 – 21:30
Gallery “POST”, Laisvės ave. 51A

Grabowski Arti, born in 1977, lives and works in Krakow. He is one of the most active and appreciated Polish performance artists of his generation. In the 20 years of his artistic activity he realized over 200 actions of strong visual impact, charged with physical energy and an intrinsic sense of humour as well as thoughtful criticism. Entertaining, horrifying, challenging and never boring, the physical action images created by Grabowski reveal the absurd, chaotic and ironic layers of society and human behaviour. Grabowski graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, where he obtained a Diploma (MA 2003, PhD 2010) with distinction of the Performance art, for the first time in Poland. At present he is an assistant professor at the Department of Intermedia, working together with Prof. Artur Tajber in Poland’s first Studio of Performance art.

Arti, in his almost 40-min show, creates ‘live’ such elements as: cheap music videos, unusually skilled or failing publicity stunts which are as being taken from the pantheon of show-business celebrities, ballet and miming pieces. All of that interrupted from time to time by exciting coughing and uttering. In the self-ironic session, Divine Arti calls the spirits of the idols of his youth such as: Lord Vader, Bruce Lee, Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury and Adam Malysz. He rises up above the ground on their shoulders to extend his 5 minutes by another 10. As a matter of fact, the eternal dream of killing gravity connects all motifs that show up and it is the key to interpret the supposedly multi-layered performance piece: a dream of flying, chasing rainbows, gulp of fresh air, tracheotomy of the button in the tight collar… or in other words – freedom.
