About

Artist, activist, architect and curator Maria Kulikovska was born in 1988 in Kerch, Ukraine (presently, since 2014, occupied by Russia).

The main instrument of Maria’s work in her own body: it’s present form, transformation and decay. Throughout her work, the idea of her body is transformed into architectural structures made from natural materials, such as salt, milk or sugar, in order to deal with ideas of production, construction and de-construction.

Along with her wife and partner Jaqueline Shabo, Maria has founded Body and Borders, an international feminist organisation that aims to support and promote female artists. Her artistic practice intertwines or continues through her activist and educational activities: such is, for example, her project Flowers of Democracy. What started as an installation of silicone molds of her genitalia, later became a rebellious action (“pink pussies”, as Maria called them, were placed on steps and fountains surrounding government buildings in Kiev), a call for action to other women, workshops of making their genitalia molds (and, as well, making women take action against the violence directed towards them, and encouraging them to take the matters into their own hands – literally as well) and series of events.

Recently Maria Kulikovska established a School of Political Performance.
